When you have an issue in your home and need to allow entry to your most personal private space how do you know what you’re getting? Safety is a priority, but do you know if they are credible?
If you are doing extensive repair work or renovations that will take continuous entry to your home, it is extremely important that you do your homework before hiring anyone. Start with talking to close friends and asking for a referral. Ads do not equate to good service. All it means is that they got your attention effectively. Neighbors or co-workers may have recently used someone for a similar service. Talk to other small business owners that you have allowed into your home for a referral that they recommend.
Next step is to check on reviews via Yelp, Facebook, Google, Home Advisor, or your local chamber. Look for consistency in ratings and reviews. Do people seem to have similar experiences? If you are doing a large scale renovation that will take extensive time and funding check to see if they have had complaints with the Texas Attorney General. The Attorney General for the state of Texas protects consumers and the legitimate business community by filing civil lawsuits under the Deceptive Trade Practices Act and other consumer protection statutes.
Most contractors need licenses and should be bonded. Check to see if they have a website with accreditations listed. Professional contractors will be bonded, insured and list their community affiliations on their site.
Questions to Ask
- How long have they been in business?
- What insurance do you carry? Does it cover personal liability or property damage?
- How many projects have they completed this year?
- Can you obtain a list of references from the contractor?
Before you hire:
- Get an estimated of all work to be completed with a timeline
- Ask for a sign off check list before final payment
- Never pay in cash. Get a receipt.
