Now more than ever just cleaning a home without disinfecting it is not good enough. Even if your home appears to be clean, it could have contaminants affecting your health. The risk of infection due to a virus or an infection is different than cleaning dirt. Sanitation eliminates contamination. A normal household has many potentially dangerous microbes but not everyone will react from transmission and cause an illness. There is generally low risk, unless a member of the home is ill.

Disinfectants have become a standard to prevent the threat of infectious disease. Handling food in the kitchen, cleanliness of the bathroom and toilet, and counter surfaces are the most highly contagious areas. Doorknobs, remote controls, light switches and soft touch surfaces should be given frequent attention to ensure sanitation is maintained.

When cleaning and sanitizing your home, the CDC has recommendations:

First, wash surfaces with soap and warm, clean water to remove dirt and debris. Next, sanitize surfaces with CDC approved disinfectant. Do not wipe. Read the label for length of time the disinfectant needs to stay of the surface before wiping.

It is critical to read and follow the safety instructions on any product you use. Below are the most important safety guidelines when using sanitizing products:

  • Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner.
  • Wear rubber or other non-porous boots, gloves, and eye protection.
  • Try not to breathe in product fumes. If using products indoors, open windows and doors to allow fresh air to enter.

If any surface is touched after raw food is prepared or before hands are washed, bacteria like salmonella, listeria, E. coli, mold, and yeast can be present. All these surfaces should be cleaned multiple times especially after food preparation to prevent cross contamination. A hard surface sanitizer will kill any food bacteria on countertops in 30 seconds.
