Winter months are when we are most vulnerable to getting colds and a flu virus. Why is that? Flu viruses love cooler temperatures and can live longer in dry air. As you know the humidity in the summer is anything but dry and cooler. Colds and flu are spread to other individuals through tiny droplets in the air from a cough or sneeze. Sometimes the virus is spread by the droplets landing on the surface of and object-phone, refrigerator, computer, or a doorknob.

Any object that is touched by more than one person can easily spread colds and viruses. Did you know that the refrigerator door handle is a mix of food, germs, microorganisms and should be wiped with a disinfectant wipe daily if someone is ill or minimally once a week?

When was the last time you wiped down the doorknobs in the bathroom? Did you know that most colds are spread through doorknobs at home and in public restrooms? The doorknob is the most common touched surface and is the culprit for spreading staphylococcus and germs from diarrhea including e-coli, and salmonella. Unfortunately, if we touch our face after we have direct contact with a door handle, the virus spreads quickly. Copper helps to kill germs, so most handles are made of copper. Brass or copper knobs will disinfect itself in 7 hours. Wipe down the doorknobs with a disinfecting wipe when you or  someone in your family has a cold or virus.

Use an alcohol based electronic wipes to wipe off germs on a remote control, a shared keyboard, and cell phones. This wipe is designed to evaporate quickly and drying spot free. Rubbing alcohol is a registered disinfectant that can also be used on tech devices including LED screens and the microwave. Cell phones are known to collect over 25,000 germs per square inch! If you look at your phone while eating it might be a good idea to disinfect your phone once each day with a wipe dabbed in rubbing alcohol.

Other places that collect germs in your home are hand towels, kitchen towels, sponges, stove knobs, pet bowls and cutting boards. Awareness and frequent cleaning will reduce the viruses from landing on you! Forget “feed a cold, starve a fever” and remember to CLEAN and DISINFECT!
