How many times do we just get in a routine of cleaning “what people see on the surface”? Are you overlooking a few places you never think about? Some of these nooks and crannies collect an enormous amount of germs and gunk that collect over time. See how many make you wonder about the last time you cleaned them. Many of these items can be wiped down quickly with a disinfectant wipe, baking soda, and vinegar.

Dishwasher
We use it daily to add dirty, and then put away clean. When was the last time you checked the trap in there that collects the food particles? Go ahead and check it now and see if there is a deposit of stuff in the corners. Over time the build-up will start to have an odor and wear down the efficiency of the dishwasher. Idea: add baking soda to the bottom of the dishwasher and let soak overnight. In the morning add a cup of vinegar and put on the hot cycle. That’s all!

Kitchen Trash Can
Often times we miss the trash bag liner and food items fall through, or we get in a hurry and spill over the top of the lid. Maybe the bag is full and the sauce spills over the inside lid of the trash can. Add the baking soda to the bottom of the trash can to eliminate odors and wipe with the disinfecting wipes.

Bed Pillows
Biggest collector of dust mites. Did you know that a lot of people are highly allergic to dust mites? More than 15% of the weight of your pillow is dust mite excrements. Yuk! Synthetic pillows can be thrown in washer, and then in dryer on low cycle with tennis balls wrapped in socks to absorb moisture. Down pillows must be wiped with wet rag and then set outside to dry or dried with a blow dryer.

Light Switches/Door Knobs
These are probably the dirtiest items in the house and most commonly forgotten. We use the door to come, let the dogs out, let the dogs in, turn the lights on, turn the lights off, etc. More than once each day. Add a little vinegar to a rag and add that to your weekly cleanings.

Cell Phone
Have you ever wiped down your phone? Did you know there are over 25,000 germs on your phone? That is more germs than the bottom of your shoe. Get out that handy disinfectant wipe and clean it down. Daily.

Remote Control
Have you ever wiped down the remote control? Get out the disinfectant wipe or alcohol damp rag and clean it down. Weekly cleanings will eliminate cold viruses in your home.

Kitchen Sink
Every day you go to your kitchen and turn on the faucet in your sink. There is more E Coli in your sink than in your toilet! Food particles love to hang out there and breed germs. Spray rubbing alcohol on sink to kill germs quickly.

Washing Machine
Water and vinegar with a little baking soda mix will do the trick. Pour the baking soda/water mix into the detergent side of washer, pour vinegar in drum, and set cycle to the hottest setting. The baking soda and vinegar will break up the mineral deposits.

Sponges/Loofahs
Throw the sponges in the dishwasher with the regular cycle. After a few weeks, throw out and buy another sponge. Loofahs in the bathroom are a huge collector of dead skin cells. Throw in a bucket of bleach for 5 minutes, and it is ready to use in shower.

Shower Heads
Hard water adds mineral deposits on the shower heads making it more difficult for the water to flow out. Vinegar and a toothbrush will unclog the shower head.

Toothbrushes
Did you know that after the first time you use your brush it has as many germs as it will a month from now? Put your toothbrush in a cup of vinegar and let it sit for 20 minutes to kill germs.

In conclusion, now that you know how easy it is to clean these “most forgotten” items, all you really need is vinegar, baking soda, and disinfectant wipes to have the fresh feeling without the 50,000 extra germs!
