Christmas is a time we have many electrical devices- tree lights, inside décor, outside lights, outside décor, and cooking appliances. We probably use more electrical outlets in December than any other time. The possible cooler temperatures may add a space heater too.
Surge protectors are an inexpensive way to protect all your electrical devices in the event of a power surge. A sudden spike in electricity, or a power surge, can damage or destroy appliances and electrically charged items very quickly
They are not all created equally, as some offer protection and others are merely an extension of a power outlet. A surge protector attempts to limit the voltage supplied to an electric device by either blocking or shorting to ground any unwanted voltages above a safe threshold.
Joules are the amount of protection offered in a surge protector-the more joules, the better the protection against power shocks. Look for a surge protector with many outlets, because you will probably always need more outlets. And they do not last forever. Joules offer a reservoir of protection, but they get used up over time.
Texas has many seasonal thunderstorms, tropical storms, and occasional hurricanes causing power surges. Surge protectors will stop voltage spikes and surges, but not the violent, catastrophic burst of current from a close lightning strike. Better to have protection than wish you had!
The easiest way to avoid power surge problems is to unplug devices that aren’t being used. Are there items around your home that can be unplugged when not in use?
One of 4 Christmas Tree fires is caused by electrical problems. Make sure your tree is not too close to a lit candle, a fireplace, or a space heater. Flames can destroy your home and lives very quickly. Unplug your tree nightly to prevent accidental fires.
